A dog was rescued after he fell into the cold waters of the Willimantic River on Friday morning.
Police assisted the fire department after a 911 call reported that the dog fell into the river, near the underpass of Route 66. When emergency services arrived at the scene, Mike, the 11-year-old Great Dane, was still in the cold water.
The dog’s owner reports that Mike slipped down the embankment and slid into the frigid water. The Willimantic Fire and Rescue officials put on cold suits and were in the water, where they successfully rescued Mike.
Mike and his owner were taken to the North Windham Animal Hospital by the police for exposure to the cold. Mike was released from the hospital only a couple of hours later, and is now recovering! Thank you to all the emergency rescue crew for saving the dog!
